Brooklyn Borough-Based Jail Facility

The new Brooklyn Borough-Based Jail Facility at 275 Atlantic Avenue is part of New York City’s long-term initiative to replace the aging Rikers Island complex with modern, borough-based detention centers. Developed by the New York City Department of Design and Construction in coordination with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice and the New York City Department of Correction, the 15-story, 377-foot-tall facility will provide 1,040 beds, community program space, staff support areas, and a secure tunnel connection to the adjacent courthouse.

Designed by HOK and delivered through a design-build approach, the 925,000-square-foot steel structure plus 4 concrete cores is rising on the site of the former Brooklyn Detention Complex in Boerum Hill. The project includes two cellar levels, enclosed parking, secure loading areas, and integrated support spaces intended to create a safer, more efficient correctional environment.

Banker Steel fabricated approximately 11,500 tons of structural steel for this project, which was erected by NYC Constructors. Banker Steel and NYC Constructor’s scope was central to maintaining structural sequencing to support the fast-paced construction schedule for this large, complex civic project.
